ABOUT US

Hi,

We are Alistair and Janet Borthwick, owners of Mid Wellwood Farm and Bothy. We have three grown up daughters, Rachel, Laura and Jemma who help out on the family farm at busy times.

Recently, we have renovated the bothy partly funded by The European Agricultural Development Fund for Rural Development.

Hope you enjoy our website and look forward to seeing you soon!

   Our  Journey...

For the past 30 years, the original Bothy on our family farm was used for storing animal feeding and machinery.  After a little imagination, the project to convert our Bothy into a holiday cottage began.

   On The Farm

Mid Wellwood is an upland sheep farm located near Muirkirk in East Ayrshire. We have blackface ewes which are crossed with the blue-faced leicester to produce Scotch Mule lambs. Visits during spring will have the opportunity to feed lambs and see the lambing shed. Throughout the year our two old pigs live in the wood opposite the bothy for you to say hello :)

We are also heavily involved in conservation schemes, encouraging the breeding of upland birds such as Hen Harriers, Owls, Merlin, Peregrine and Golden Plower.  On the farm, we have paths which lead directly to the River Ayr, providing an excellent escape to nature.

The village of Muirkirk is full of fascinating historical walks itself. The walker's Car Park begins these routes

  • Tibbies Brig is a famous bridge surrounded by beautiful trees and scenery in the heart of Muirkirk. The bridge is in memory of the Scottish Poet Isabel Pagan who lived and died there. This is a short 20 min walk and is easily accessed.

  • Sanquhar Brig is found on the route to Sanquhar from Muirkirk and is a pleasant walk through the countryside. Approx 5km walk there and back.
